This pattern includes three versatile variations—mix and match construction methods and fabrics to dial in the perfect warmth-to-weight ratio for your style of adventure:

• Headband: The ultimate minimalist ear warmer for brisk runs, cycling, or under-helmet layering. This pattern offers two construction methods: a sleek double-layer knit finish or a simple, single-layer fleece version for active moisture management.
• Fitted Beanie: A single-layer, form-fitting design that delivers maximum breathability and minimum bulk. It’s ideal for high-endurance activities where you need to dump heat quickly. Its low-volume profile fits excellently under helmets. Pro Tip: Use Alpha Direct for an incredible weight-to-warmth ratio.
• Slouch Beanie: A comfortable, double-layer design where all seams are neatly enclosed. This option emphasizes winter warmth and relaxed, everyday style. It can be worn cuffed or slouched back, and the extra volume works perfectly if you wear your hair up in a bun or ponytail.

Sewing Skill Level – Beginner

The Alpha Beanies are a fantastic starting point for anyone new to sewing performance gear. If you can sew a straight line and a zigzag, you can make these! The simple construction and low material investment make this a rewarding first project using technical fleece or other active knits.

• Simple Seams: You'll be using few seams with zigzag stitches. Also a great first project for a new serger.
• Hemming Knits: The Fitted Beanie teaches a simple, clean hem for knits with options for more advanced methods.
• Lined Construction: The Slouch Beanie teaches a clean, enclosed-seam method for lining.

A domestic sewing machine is all you need. While a serger can speed up construction and give professional finish, it is optional. Patience and a new set of ballpoint or stretch needles are your most valuable tools.

Fabrics & Notions

The Alpha Beanies pattern is designed for use with knit fabrics that have good recovery. A specific stretch percentage is not required. The key is ensuring your Direction of Greatest Stretch (DOGS) can wrap around your head. Full details, cut layout, and instructions are included in the pattern download.

• Polartec® Alpha Direct (60–90 gsm): Ideal for the Fitted Beanie for ultra-lightweight, high-output warmth.
• Polartec® Power Grid™ or Power Dry: Excellent for lightweight, moisture-wicking headwear (Fitted Beanie, Headband).
• Microfleece or French Terry: Versatile choice for all styles, offering a balance of warmth and comfort.
• Merino or Bamboo Jersey: Natural fibers suitable for the double-layer Slouch Beanie or Headband for casual wear.
